The first application of systemic constellations was for personal issues and was identified as Family Constellations. Systemic Constellations have also been adapted for applications in other field, such as education, organizational development, coaching and consulting, health practices and law. When applied to other fields, systemic constellation work is not considered therapy, but a process for clarifying systemic issues, which may incidentally have a therapeutic benefit.
Organizational Constellations developed with an understanding that organizations, as in all human systems, are influenced by many of the same dynamics found in Family Constellations. Processes have been successfully adapted for use in resolving systemic business and organizational issues. Organizational Constellations differ in approach by de-emphasizing personal or family-of-origin dynamics and instead, focusing on the systemic dynamics of the group or groups involved.
The article from Dr. Walsh outlines the theories of Family Constellations (SEE: The Theory Behind Constellations), yet it also lays the groundwork for understanding many of the dynamics that impact organizational structures. Family Constellations theory and organizational principles are the basis for our understanding of large group dynamics. Facilitators are mindful of the different needs of the organizational client. Constellations for organizations are applied appropriately for the circumstances of the organization and the client.
